Why Student Engagement is Important in a Post-COVID World – and 5 Strategies to Improve It

Summary: Although we have an idea of the effects of low-quality remote instruction on student achievement gaps, we don’t yet fully understand the effects of social isolation, inconsistent structures, and personal trauma on student engagement.

What we do know is that student engagement remains important to learning and achievement, and it’s likely that teachers will need to find new ways to motivate and engage their students.

Understanding how to re-engage students requires first understanding the definition of student engagement, the benefits, the different types of engagement, what it looks like in the classroom, and the psychology of engagement. At the end of the blog, you’ll also find five student-driven strategies to improve engagement and motivation.

Summary: FEDERAL FUNDING AND MULTILATERAL AGREEMENTS WITH PROVINCES AND TERRITORIES

The federal government has a direct role in funding early childhood programs for First Nations, Métis and Inuit children, for military personnel, federal prisoners and refugees and immigrants to Canada.

The Multilateral Early Learning and Child Care Framework agreement was signed in June 2017 between the federal government and the provinces and territories. A 10-year investment strategy was outlined in Budget 2017, with $500 million growing slowly over the first 3 year phase. Although federal funding was small it did spurn interest with all jurisdictions adding their own revenue to boost child care spending.

Summary: Distance learning has a long history in Canada, and online learning capabilities have greatly accelerated its adoption in recent years. The opportunities and challenges provided by distance learning have become highly relevant as the COVID-19 pandemic forced a transition from traditional in-class learning to distance learning for both students and educators who may have been unfamiliar with these systems. This education technology report builds on previous ICTC research to examine distance learning in Canada. It makes use of primary research, based on interviews with 20 education subject matter experts from across Canada, a survey of 1063 Canadian students and parents, and secondary research to explore distance learning in Canada and abroad. In addition to identifying opportunities and challenges for distance learning, it also provides a planning framework for future adoption of distance learning in the education system.

Our vision for the future builds on SOI’s success in experiential learning and youth engagement to now develop new programs that include land-based, community-based, and virtual learning opportunities. Additionally, SOI is broadening its support of youth beyond experiential learning to offer new opportunities and resources for mentorship, professional development and community service.
